Exclusive Conversation With Rising Artist Mahaji

Hi Mahaji, please tell us more about what made you become an artist. Did your surroundings growing-up helped you in finding your lane and style?

What pushed me to become an artist was the simple fact that I was always good at music whether it came to my ear on just listening to it, making poems in school, or just freestyling over a beat in the car. I knew I had a gift. Regardless of what people thought about me I knew deep down “ oh I can change my life with this.“ Growing up I wasn’t surrounded with people who did music or even wanted to better themselves. Life was more about day by day surviving & I knew from a young age that I didn’t want to live like that. I knew I wasn’t born in the circumstances I would like to live in, they weren’t anywhere around me, so I would have to create them. So that’s exactly what I’m doing. My style really comes from listening to amazing artists and finding my own. Chris Brown, Tupac, Tory Lanez, Xxxtentacion, August Alsina, Drake, Russ, Kanye, Linkin Park, Papa Roach, & Dancehall. Also from just being around so many different settings growing up because I wouldn’t ever be around one set of people consistently I would just pick things up from hanging out with different friend groups.

What inspired your biggest hit to date, “Snowing”?

Ummm Snowing was just a fun song. Honestly, I didn’t think much of it when I first made the hook. just another day in the studio. I think that was one of nine songs we made that day. The hook just came to me. I didn’t have to overthink it or even really think at all honestly. After I found the melody I knew the song would be catchy but to this day that song will forever be a blessing. I will say this though. I had been in a really toxic relationship at the time so maybe without thinking about it that’s what i was writing about.

How was the experience of collaborating with Prvnci?

Ohhh that experience is the best in the world. A lot of people think me and Prvnci just came together & made a song. That’s actually my brother so we have tons of songs together. All we do is create & make music. Having a hit, especially your first hit with your brother is amazing. Love prvnci for life that’s blood & that’ll never change.

How did your sound evolve since you started making music?

It’s evolved a lot. Just being more comfortable trying things & getting used to the sound of my own voice. Knowing that every song doesn’t have to be perfect really takes a lot of weight off my shoulders. Yeah I do take my craft seriously but I wanna have fun making it. If it’s not fun it just becomes a job. But my sound went from just this raw style of rap to songs like “ revenge “ which is for any mosh pit, to “ gray “ which is more of a vibe, to “ toxic drip “ which is rock, & of course “ snowing “ which to me is like a blend of r&b, pop, & rap.

What style best describes your music?

I like to be described as an “ artist.“ I never want to be put into a box that I can’t find my way out of & when people hear me doing something different they won’t accept me. But I’ll say this, my style of music is for the broken, the lonely, the hurting, the people who wake up & feel misunderstood, the ones who have trouble smiling, or want to hurt themselves & just need some love or hope. At the very least to know they aren’t alone.

How do you like spending your time when you are not working on your music?

When I’m not working on music I’m going to waterfalls & just trying to clear my mind & grow as a person. I like to get out. I’m not really a homebody at all. I like creating memories. That or I’m kickboxing, when I was younger I used to wanna be in the ufc so kickboxing is something I still & always will love to do.

What are you currently working on, any upcoming plans you would like to share with our audience?

Currently I’m working on a new single & how I wanna go about it called “ love my sweatpants “. I can’t wait for you all to hear it. Straight banger I wanna share with my fans, my supporters, the diamonds that continue to be yourself & remember weird is good. As long as you’re not hurting people, do what makes you happy. I love you guys.

Thank You!
